Introspectus Gaius and his self-justifications.

I really like this for the clear picture it gives into Gaius' head and the explanation for why he keeps magic secret from Morgana. As you're all probably aware, his refusal to teach Morgana about her magic has been one of the chief reasons I grew distinctly less fond of him throughout season 2. It helps getting to see why. =) [livejournal.com profile] selenak's Merlin fanfiction is quite good about character insight really, you should read them all.

[livejournal.com profile] hmsharmony gave me Merlin, Doctor Who, and Avatar: the Last Airbender. From Doctor Who I've only seen season 1, the Christmas special, and the first episode of season 2. From Avatar I've seen the first fourteen episodes. So keep that in mind peeps!

Let's go! )

So hey, that was fun. SORRY I FAIL SO BADLY AT PROPERLY ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS [livejournal.com profile] hmsharmony.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] bookshop wrote a post about women in fandom and it was quite interesting. You should go read it now!

Please let's stop making ourselves choose. Let's write strong men *and* women, who love each other and love themselves, and fight and have sex or don't have sex, and who love other men, and other women, and who aren't stuck in gender roles that are as rigidly assigned in slash fandom as they are anywhere else.

Done? Awesome. I hope you read the comments too because there was some really good stuff there as well.

Anyways I'm writing this post because of an argument I saw pop up in the comments somewhere. The commenter was talking about how she isn't interested on certain female characters (Gwen from Merlin as an example) because they're written as perfect and without flaws. Now before I get into anything else I'd like to say I am not responding against that comment. It is perfectly cool if you're not into Gwen, not everybody is (sad but true. I've learned to accept it). But this argument about 'perfect' characters being boring and without flaws is one I've seen pop up alot in regards to Gwen and I've always wondered why I disagree with it so strongly. I mean obviously flawed characters are more interesting characters right? It's one of those truisms; you don't really question it because it's so patently obvious.

Except I don't really think it is. )

I don't know. I don't really feel like I've got my thoughts completely straight just yet but I'm posting anyways because I'd like to see what the rest of you have to say on the topic. How do you feel about flawed heros? Virtuous heroines? Genderswapped versions of both?

Vita Guineveris

Fantastic look at Guinevere through season 1 and 2. Also does a great job of fixing the way To Kill a King was all about Morgana when Gwen really should've gotten more focus what with it being her father dead (it was still a great episode and I think the problem came from the larger pattern of Guinevere being mostly sidelined all through season 1. Which is something that got fixed a bit in season 2! \o/ The more time I have away from the season to watch vids and read fanfic the better I like it).

Plus there's this.

There is a game among the castle staff now. If you feel especially rotten, especially if the king or his orders are the cause of your unhappiness, think of him wedding and bedding a troll and figure out a way to make a reference to the late Queen Katrina as innocently as possible, then watch his face. It will cheer you up to no end. Gwen might or might not have started the game.

New personal canon right there. =D

This is that one shipping meme I've seen all over the place. Apparently having an exam tomorrow is a GREAT incentive towards actually writing it out.

Some of my answers are not 100% accurate on account of wanting to do a different pairing for each category. So yeah.

One True Pairing Ship: Merlin/Gwen. Friendship mostly but I can roll with romance too.
Canon Ship: Arthur/Gwen. Uther/Ygraine.
"If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship: Uther/any of the main cast.
"You are one sick bastard" Ship: Uhh idk. Anything with non-con I guess.
"I dabble a little" Ship: Morgana/Merlin, Will/Morgana (there should be more of this! Cross-reference to 'no canon sense')
"It's like a car crash" Ship: Uther/Merlin. I love Merls fandom willingness to ship anything but umm NO.
"Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship: Arthur/Morgana.
"Makes no canon sense but why the hell not" Ship: Arthur/Morgause? They're both blonde and pretty, it's enough of a reason for me. =D
Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship: Arthur/Merlin. S_S Sorry fandom but I am way burned out on this.
"When all is said and done" Ship: :/ Unfair category what. I already used Arthur/Gwen for canon ship. Morgana/Gwen then I guess. Arthur/Gwen.
OT3/OTMore Ship: Any combination of the OT4. Lancelot can join in too.

Well that was a fun waste of time. Back to studying ancient Athens then.

Spoilers are not very awesome. In their defense, spoilers would like to point out that this episode was by Julian Jones. )

Wow. That was alot of commentary for an episode that was average at best. But I guess average comes out really good after the ragefest of last week (there's a reason I didn't post on episode 12. It had to do with wanting to BREAK THINGS when it was over. I had to watch an episode of Buffy to distract myself and calm down. On that note, watching Kennedy flirt with Willow is a great way to improve one's mood! Buffy season 7, I recommend it! ^.^)

Palimpset

I like this fic very much. I haven't seen much Merlin fic that really bothered exploring Nimueh and it's a terrible pity. She was an interesting character (who I fervently hope isn't dead).

This was amazing. I didn't think anyone could manage to make Merlin fit into actual Arthurian mythology (because seriously, the show just took the names and left the story) but she did. I think I'm going to have to go read it half a dozen times more.

In other news: episode 12!!!!!!!

- See they're trying to imply something between Guinevere and Lancelot with the music, only I don't buy it at all. Also, I don't dislike Lancelot yet which is neat. =) I am finding his attachment to the rules slightly endearing actually.

- Ahahaha. I love Merlin's stupid little thumbs up. 'Don't worry Lance! Arthur is a natural bully! It just means he likes you! =D'

- I am beginning to suspect that beating people down is just Arthur's way of saying hello. Rather like the rest of us might say good morning.

- I have figured out why I like Lancelot. It is because he is socially awkward and a terrible liar. Unlike his legendary counterpart who was supremely perfect until the day he decided to go have an affair with Guinevere. Perfect people are boring. Cheaters suck.

- -chokes on Merlin's obliviousity-

- Lancelot is such a good guy. <3

- Arthur is made of hilarious faces! xD

- I love the way everybody in this episode fell in love with Lancelot. ^.^ Merlin was the first, it happened in like 5 minutes. Then Gwen and then Arthur. Uther didn't but I am starting to suspect Uther is not actually human.
