Some Thoughts on Naruto Volume 50

themadpokerSo as I was reading this volume I tried to answer a question to myself. And that question was ‘Why the hell is Sasuke so set on destroying Konoha? It’s not even anything resembling justice! He could go after Danzo and I’d be like more power to him but he wants to hurt tons of people who had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to Itachi. Seriously Sasuke, this is why I’m hoping so hard that Sakura will kill you.’
So. Let us attempt to embark on a journey into this immensely screwed up kid’s mind. We know Sasuke structured most of his life around killing Itachi. He killed his entire family, vengeance, blah blah blah we’ve heard the whole thing ten million times. So after he does a whole lot of stupid things to get to this point he’s there. Killing Itachi, woo, life’s goal attained. And then he hears this new story. Itachi didn’t want to kill his clan. Itachi did it to save Konoha. Itachi was made to do it by Danzo and some other guys who constituted the behind the scenes power in Konoha. So now maybe his brother isn’t such a bad guy. Maybe Sasuke can love his brother again. But it isn’t that simple you know? Sasuke’s spent alot of time building up hatred against his brother and now that hate and love is pretty tightly mixed. So what does Sasuke do? He says he’ll destroy Konoha. And when you think about it that actually dovetails pretty well with everything he’s feeling at the moment. Because on the one hand he loved his brother and he’s going to revenge himself on Danzo and co. for forcing his brother’s hand*. And on the other hand he hates his brother and he’s going to get one last shot in. Itachi massacred their family to save Konoha? Fine well screw you brother, I am going to destroy that village you loved so much. That’s what you get for picking them over us. Just killing Danzo isn’t enough because it satisfies point one but not point two.
So I guess that’s my explanation. I think whether Sasuke survives the manga is going to be dependent on whether he actually kills any Konoha ninja in pursuit of his goal. Because so far Kishimoto’s been very careful to limit his damage. Sasuke’s killed Orochimaru and he’s killed Itachi. He hasn’t killed anyone innocent yet and by the laws of shonen manga that means he can still be redeemed. I will be upfront and say I’d rather have Sakura just kill him because I don’t have a whole lot of faith in Kishimoto’s ability to write a convincing redemption/change of heart (see Pain, the incredibly stupid writing of) but I’m pretty sure he’ll go down the Saviour!Naruto route. Oh well.
In other news, Madara wants to use moon hypnotism to take over the world. What. 0_o This manga.
