Movies

9. Captain America: Civil War (May 14) -- 3.5 stars

Good movie! Politically incoherent but a good movie. It's an experience to watch this when your background is in political science and your friend's is in international relations because we looked at each other with identical expressions of disbelief when Stark started arguing in favour of the UN administrating the Sokovia Accords. REALLY? I think they should have made another imaginary international organization a la the World Council because anyone even somewhat familiar with the UN will immediately think about its immense failures as a peacekeeping entity (I was sitting there thinking 'Sam! Bring up Rwanda! Srebrenica! There are actual historical examples of cases when the UN failed horrifically to prevent atrocities! You're ex-military; there is no way you weren't taught this! Yes, they've had some successes but there's still more than enough there to lend some teeth to Steve's concerns about placing that power in their hands. Not to mention Rhodey's argument that they'd be respecting the wishes of 117 nations is bullshit; there are 5 nations in the UN with veto power and they're the ones that'd be holding your reins').

All of which is funny because in what universe does a movie manage to emotionally place me on the side of Team Give Americans Unilateral Powers of Intervention With No Accountability! Like, what. That is a morally horrific position.

Basically the MCU is really not set up to have a discussion of the place of superheroes in international politics because the only possible conclusion is superheroes are the worst idea ever and you would need at LEAST a full mini-series to work out the social and political implications and start stumbling your way to some kind of workable regulations to make them less the equivalent of Superheroes: All the Problems With the Police With Even Fewer Ways to Render Them Accountable!

In conclusion: Team T'Challa. Bring on the Black Panther movie. 3.5 stars
