THE HELL.

Sex while sleeping? Sex while sleeping? Do you know what is absent while one is asleep? THE ABILITY TO CONSENT.

Taking a break from this book, suspect the rage will overwhelm any enjoyment I might get from reading it for awhile.

Well, that would actually depend. If one is in a long-term relationship - a functional one - with a standing agreement to have sex whenever, than I think waking up because your partner is trying to get frisky is pretty nice. IMO.

I mean, I've never been in this situation but since I've been together with my partner for 11 years, I don't expect him to explicitly ask my permission before starting a make-out session.

But I bet that wasn't the book's situation, hmmmm.

Yeah not so much. The heroine straight up tells the hero not to. >( Their relationship is not the most functional thing at that point of the story.

WTF?!!! You did the right thing by taking a break from that book. Not cool!

Really not! I will have to proceed with caution the next time I try a book by her (I've liked her work before, I'm hoping this was a fluke).

Oh well see when she's unconscious her body responds more favourably to him! Tip to Ms. Thomas: when trying to write sympathetic hero not having him have sex with the heroine when she doesn't want to should be high on your list! (Also don't set your romance in colonial India because then I will have to struggle with the fact that your main characters are the villains. It's hard to root for the hero when you're cheering for the revolutionaries!)

GROSS. Ditch the book and never read another one by this author again.

Burn it. BURN IT WITH FIRE.

Except I would never support burning a book. That would be bad. Uhu.

But, really, is it such a surprise that people don't get what consent means when you run into shit like this in romance novels (I assume it's a romance novel based on your tag)? And many other places in our society. See also: Assange. And a couple of friend's (in some cases, x-) boyfriends. Urg.

I was reminded of the Assange case when I read it! And augh no, Sherry Thomas that is not the sort of thing you want me to be thinking about when you are attempting to sell me on a romance. >( She's generally pretty decent with her gender politics too, I'm going to classify this one as a fluke and proceed with caution the next time I try a book by her.
