Hello livejournal! As of three days ago I am unemployed. Combined with the fact of it being reading week I have discovered it is extremely unhealthy for me to have too much free time. A break is nice but more than one day of being twitchy, spending too much time reading fic, and eating chocolate is just not good for anyone. :l Thank God I have tkd tomorrow.

HOLY GOD ALMIGHTY. I need to listen to tumblr more often; I wanted to see this movie because everyone made it sound good but I didn't realize how 100% imperative it was. This has to be my favourite alien movie ever. Like seriously I want this to be the new everybody-is-at-least-vaguely-influenced-by-it genre definer. Somebody come talk to me about it so I can process feelings in a coherent non-spoilers-and-tears-everywhere manner.
20. The Artist (October 23) – 3.5 stars
That was interesting! I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy a silent film – the beginning in particular had me just waiting for some dialogue to break up the sequence – but it worked for this movie. I think it was because the story used really familiar tropes and had a cast of primarily good people. I was thinking as I watched that the thing about talking pictures is that as a form they allow for quieter types of stories. It isn't inaccurate to describe the silent actors as mugging for the camera. It's a valid acting style particularly for the kind of familiar story this movie told but it wouldn't work in a subtler film. The actors were excellent, they had incredibly mobile expressive faces that said everything that needed saying. By that same token I don't think they would have suited a quieter/introspective/slice-of-life kind of story. So basically the form of this film worked perfectly for the content! Funny how that particular English major lesson keeps getting proved everywhere. :) 3.5 stars
