Ugh internet, why do you have to be so dumb? I’ve been reading all the Mockingjay reviews on [livejournal.com profile] bookish as they come in and people keep talking about how selfish Katniss is and how she doesn’t deserve Peeta or Gale and my face has gradually gone from :) --> :l --> :( I should have just stuck to discussing the book with my brother, he is not a dumb person. He knows that Katniss is awesome and a survivor and the important things to discuss about this book are:

a) how giving Katniss a brief respite from the hunger games let everyone have proper emotional reactions now that they are not set to ‘survive at all costs, think later’,
b) Haymitch-Katniss parallels which have been there since book one and how great it is that they’re still determined to stick together with their rescue Peeta pact,
c) Finnick and how awesome he is and how we should have known he was going to die when things started going well for him, argh, Collins how could you, there was only a few pages to go, couldn’t you have let him live?,
d) the greatness of Johanna being back and getting to see her develop a relationship with Katniss that was comrades rather than dislike,
e) Katniss and relationships in general and how she actually got to develop some this book, and how I finally get why people might ship her with Gale because while they were clearly never going to happen the best friends really knowing each other thing has its appeal,
f) how Collins seemed to realize that while we were inclined to like Peeta just for his devotion to Katniss, there wasn’t much to him outside of that and consequently made him more interesting with the Capitol brainwashing thing – and huh, it occurs to me now maybe that’s why reviewers were so convinced of Katniss being selfish and horrible? But they are still dumb because i. he was brainwashed and ii. umm, okay, she didn’t seem to be romantically interested in him earlier, what’s wrong with that? And you don’t get to call her selfish for trying to survive oh my God, it was the hunger games, kill or be killed.
g) Prim. ;_; She was so great and had grown into herself and seriously we should have noticed the pattern, developing awesome = destined to die.

There you go Internet! A brief list of things which are all way more relevant and interesting to discuss then why you think Katniss sucks because you are all wrong and I’m pretty sure you all don’t want comments from me consisting of =(((( wrong. wrongcakes. Katniss rocks you wrong people. Which I would never actually put but I am thinking it so start failing less okay?

Why can't people appreciate good things? Katniss is such a great character and I love that she's such a survivor and a small part of me can't help but think that if all the genders were switched people would have no issues with boy!Katniss at all. >( I'm almost starting to dislike Peeta because of all the people saying he's too good for her except then I remind myself it's not his fault people are so dumb and he would totally be on my side with regards to Katniss' awesome.

I completely agree wrt the genderswap; I've encountered this so many times in so many different fandoms ("Rory is great! Amy is a whore!" "Harry is wonderful! I hate Ginny so much!") but I wonder if it's partly due to people seeming to read The Hunger Games as a YA romance. Which it, y'know, isn't. The romance is a key sub-plot, but it's a story about a girl and a revolution. Therefore, TEAM KATNISS (Malinda Lo (author of Ash, an amazing LGBT YA romance) wrote an awesome blog about Katniss' awesome), although I love Peeta and thought the hijacking arc was all kinds of excellent and fascinating and necessary. Once again, HG fandom Could Not Disagree More.

Oh my God, Doctor Who fandom. I had to drop [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho comm from my reading list because of the Rory-Amy thing you just said. ._. But umm, off topic.

I think you're spot on there! There's all these arguments about Team Peeta vs. Team Gale when that was never meant to be the focus of the story. And shipping is one of those things that can get fandom really really dead set against a character (I'm pretty sure a significant amount of Ginny hate comes from the fact that she married Harry. Which. It's weird to say but sometimes I think fandom cares a little too much about canon, it's not that hard to go AU or handwave or write a breakup if you want to. No need for this virulent hatred).

The hijacking arc was pretty interesting! And Mockingjay was really the anti-war, PTSD book and it played in well with the theme. And I'm going to check out that blog post, I really liked Ash so I'm sure she'll have excellent things to say.

Ugh, I still watch [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho /o\ It's morbid fascination. Like a car crash. Thanks god [livejournal.com profile] doctoreleven is much, much better and saner.

No, I agree completely - I mean, fandom is intrinsically separate to canon, and just because something gets jossed doesn't mean you can't enjoy/read/write it. Why the hate, people. Also, the amount of people who disliked the ending because it wasn't romantic enough - argh. PTSD kind of gets in the way of the 5 page makeout sessions! I'm not opposed to that by any means, but it wouldn't have fitted this book.

I'm just so impressed that Collins went there, especially because it was so cruel (and therefore perfect and very The Capitol) after two books of devoted!wonderful!Peeta.

Hey, actually, in terms of ships - did the Katniss/Peeta conclusion seem organic to you? because I've heard people saying that Katniss' choice came out of nowhere and was too passive, but I thought it was pretty clear all the way through that she was gravitating towards Peeta - she'd chosen before she really knew she had.

I love [livejournal.com profile] doctoreleven. =D A comm that likes the show's characters and doesn't bash? Who would've thought?

It felt pretty organic to me. From the first book on I never felt any doubt that Katniss was going to end up with Peeta. The only part I felt a little iffy on was when she said that she'd been against it but they had children because Peeta wanted them so badly. :/ I mean I can fanwank it as the war's over and she knows any kids she has won't be called to the hunger games so she's okay with it. And symbolically I can see why she did it because how wrong it was that they lived in a world that hurt its children was a huge theme so getting to see that they had kids and were alright stood in as proof that everything's okay now.

But still. :/
