Ever have moments when you breathe in and suddenly your stomach flutters like something exciting is about to happen. And you think hey maybe everything is going to be okay today and forever and you think something's going to happen and you think maybe there is something I should be worried about?

And you sit and your stomach does its butterfly thing and now you're running and wondering and tip-turning. And you are thinking of thinking on a grand scale where everything is heroes and crises and perseverance and dedication. And everything you overcome is in yourself and you're someone special and it's worth the word triumph.

And suddenly the feeling is gone and you wonder where that came from. Maybe everybody gets a special moment once in awhile whenever they need it. When everything is ordinary, nothing bad, on the whole good, fine day today. And you say thank you because sometimes it's nice to light up the sky.

“The Quiet World”
Jeffrey McDaniel

In an effort to get people to look
into each other's eyes more,
the government has decided to allot
each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.

When the phone rings, I put it
to my ear without saying hello.
In the restaurant I point
at chicken noodle soup. I am
adjusting well to the new way.

Late at night, I call my long
distance lover and proudly say
I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.

When she doesn't respond, I know
she's used up all her words
so I slowly whisper I love you,
thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.
