Doctor Who Recs: The Amy Pond Edition
The Doctor Who finale airs today! I am full of anticipation and would quite like the clock to run a bit faster now. But since that seems unlikely to happen and I am not in possession of a TARDIS I am need of something to do while waiting for the episode. I COULD study for my exam Tuesday but that would be so out of character for me I would be frightened and begin to wonder if I've been secretly been replaced with an Auton. So instead you are all getting an Amy Pond rec post!
Fanvids
Stray Italian Grayhound Truth: I have rewatched this vid at least once daily ever since it came out. I love it more than anything, it's a perfect summary of Amy Pond in four minutes set to Vienna Teng. Spoilers through 5.07.
Wild Child "Amy Pond, in all her crazy, issue-having gorgeous people-saving leaping-before-she-looks eccentric glory." Spoilers through 5.07.
Fireflies Eleven/Amy. You want to know how great this vid is? Mention the word fireflies to my brother, he will talk about how I REFUSE to stop playing this song all the time. What, it's a really great vid okay. :< Why I Love Amy In Conjunction with Eleven: A Video Summary. Spoilers through 5.09.
Fanfiction
{and swallow fireflies} One of the earliest Amy fics in the fandom, written after the pilot. Characterization still holds up quite well although most of the plot has been jossed. Spoilers for 5.01.
Remember This, Remember Me Amy/Rory, Amy/Eleven. There is a hole in Amy’s memory. I love this fic for doing Amy/Eleven while still doing justice to Amy/Rory. Also fantastic Amy Pond voice but obviously that's a requirement for everything on this list. Spoilers up to 5.10.
Seventeen Facts about Amelia Jessica Pond Amy is genuinely mentally ill by human standards. She’s diagnosed with Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. And it’s not a misdiagnosis. Amy is crazy. Really, really crazy. She loves Rory because he taught her that she’s still human, and she loves the Doctor because he taught her that she’s not only still human, but still amazing. I quite like this take on Amy Pond. No spoilers whatsoever.
And Fill The Trees With Apples Pregnant!Amy on a TARDIS! Also I love love love
paperclipbitch's canon on Jeff being Amy's best friend. No spoilers except for one teeny one on 5.07 in the notes.
Picspams
The One Facial Expression of Karen Gillan Recently in Doctor Who fandom there has been a phenomenon I call Bad Who. It appears many members of the fandom have somehow been downloading another Doctor Who Season 5 which is terrible and lacking in emotional resonance and Matt Smith and Karen Gillan haven't been acting brilliantly in. I am very sorry for these people! I hope they can soon watch the Doctor Who I've been watching, it's fantastic. One comment often heard from the Bad Who viewers has regarded Karen Gillan's single facial expression. So here is a series of picspams of Karen Gillan and her one expression. ;)

That Doesn't Mean What You Think it Means: a Doctor Who Feminism Rant
And herein lies fandom's problem with Amy - she's a female character who is treated well by the narrative despite her possession of traditionally "male" attributes (sexual confidence, capability, independence, cleverness etc.), and for some reason, people resent that. She is "too forward" and "too sexual" because her sexuality is independent of a man's perception of her and she is completely comfortable with that. She is "too clever" and "it's all about her" because she is capable of saving the day sometimes and does so. She is the one of the most narratively celebrated female characters on Doctor Who since Ace, and she is hated for it. There's been quite a bit of meta responding to certain segments of fandom's faily responses to Amy Pond. This is one of the better ones.
Amy Pond, the girl who'll save herself Have you noticed that, more often than not in these first 4 episodes, Amy has been the one to solve the problem or save the day? Not the Doctor. Amy. Little Miss Amelia Pond, girl from a fairytale who ended up disillusioned and pretty fucked in the head by the Doctor's constant promising and not delivering. (I'm not saying it was his fault — this is how time travel works, unfortunately — but you know she wouldn't be this messed up if he hadn't fallen out of his box and into her front yard.) Amy Pond is pretty special indeed. Spoilers up to 5.06.
Mad, Impossible Amy Pond Another in the Stop Being Faily About Amy Pond genre. I really like this for the analysis it gives on Amy and women on Doctor Who. Also has some critique of the Amy/Rory relationship.
No fanart sorry, I am sure there's some brilliant ones out there but they have been hiding from me. Feel free to rec me some in the comments! And here have a bonus rec to make up for it.
Bonus Rec:
(I think I made you up inside my head.) This is an analytical comparison of the current season of Doctor Who with Michael Ende's The Neverending Story. It is hands down my favourite piece of meta to come out of fandom for this season.
This was a really good timewaster! Especially considering I could not resist the urge to reread and watch everything I just recced. =) The stuff here is just my favourites, for more Amy Pond check out her character tag on my del.ici.ous.
