Reaction Post: The Tears of Uther Pendragon Part II

No episode play by play, I was watching with my cousin so I didn’t do any pauses. Instead, have some scattered post ep thoughts!

+ Oh my gosh show. Talk logistics to me. Tell me about your provisions and your battle plans and your strategizing, I eat this stuff up with a spoon. *_* There were some epic battles in this episode and that was great but my favourite parts were seeing Arthur make his plans and watching the people stream into Camelot. I love it when I get the sense that there’s a kingdom on this show.

+ The Merlin-Arthur moment of Destiny was quite nice. It’s good to see Arthur not be a prat sometimes, you know? And I think Merlin really needed to hear some appreciation for once. The little smile he had afterwards, very sweet. <3 This episode was really a reminder of why Arthur/Gwen/Merlin are totally my epic Camelot OT3.

+ Also I am super easy when it comes to Gwen screen time, I could not spare much time to be like :l at her only getting to show as emotional support for Arthur or to be suspicious at Morgana because hello, she was THERE. She even talked to Merlin for two seconds! It beat Part I okay, that’s all I am saying.

+ And yes she needs to call him sire, oh Gwen. I do not know how much that whole distance thing is going to work out for you what with the supporting each other and his tendency to ask about you as his connection to the people and also how he looks at your face <3333.

+ Haha what is up with the dragon, I have no handle on him anymore. He is now Team Camelot? He thinks Merlin trusted Morgana? What. When did Merlin trust Morgana, the only thing I can think of is back in the halcyon days of season 1 with Mordred. Or perhaps he is referring to her show of magical repentance in 3.01 or whatever but I actually think Merlin’s belief had more to do with his relief at being able to put down the ‘I tried to kill Morgana and now she is going to tell Uther and I will be DEAD’ dread than any innate tendency to trust people. He wanted to believe it so he did.

+ I sort of want Morgana fic now as she is on the show. Because watching this episode it strikes me that they’ve actually been fairly consistent with her flaws, it’s just that I prefer to read her more generously because I have alot of affection lingering from season one with bonus sympathy for her isolated magical predicament. But like. She is really super centered on herself. Merlin actually says straight out that she’s going to be killing innocent people and she makes it all about her again, turning it back to her Uther killing quest. :( So I guess I wouldn’t necessarily criticize the writers for not making her grayer, it’s not that out of character but I really wish it was.

+ Also hi Merlin/Morgana I am back to shipping you again. Yes please do constantly plot and work to thwart each other and generally be excellent twisted shippy material. Also I am finally okay with Morgana not knowing Merlin’s magic because with the way she deliberately uses her class power (that moment in the hallway totally had me thinking about [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz’ meta on class in Merlin) means he really needs that advantage there for them to not feel too unbalanced. So uhh go on keeping the magic secret? What is this, how is this episode upending all my principles.

+ But when I say secret I mean for Morgana, if they could have Gwen find out I would...man I don’t even know what I would do. Send a fan letter? Picspam the whole scene? Make further attempts to have all my friends start watching this show? I don’t know but it would be a great great thing and I want it to happen soon.

+ Cendred backed down right quick. I mean he lost the skeleton army (lolol oh the CGI badness) but he still had a huge numbers advantage. I get the sense he is not super attached to the idea of taking over Camelot, he’ll do it if it can be done easily with little cost but otherwise he bounces. Which is good for him and his people I guess but does not make for super interesting villainy. Maybe our next serious episode could have Morgause manipulating a group of magical radicals? Because it could make for interesting TV to have antagonists whose goal actually is just to kill Uther. So far it’s been pretty easy to paint the antagonists as being very bad guys because they generally do worse than just try to take Uther down, they disregard the lives of innocent civilians to do so (I miss you Nimueh! But that is totally what you did). But if we had a group that really truly just wanted to kill Uther and did not think it was okay to sacrifice half Camelot in the attempt we might have an actual moral dilemma for Merlin and that is a thing I would like to see.

+ Nothing came of the ghosts, boo. =( Though it’s interesting that we kept seeing Ygraine dripping water. Uther never drowned her and as far as I know she had no connection to magic outside of her death. But I don’t think we’re meant to treat it as significant, probably the show just thought it looked cool.

YESSSSS. So often the castle feels so ISOLATED from the rest of Camelot, like it's its a completely different country. The streaming in of the people made my night. It was just a lovely scene overall. <3

This episode was really a reminder of why Arthur/Gwen/Merlin are totally my epic Camelot OT3.

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. OMG. They NEED to build Camelot together. DO NOT LET GWEN FALL BY THE WAYSIDE, SHOW, OKAY? Merlin's the policy adviser, and Gwen is ABSOLUTELY the representative of the people. PLAY IT UP.

and also how he looks at your face <3333.

LMFAO. TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN, BB. How could ANYONE resist that look of his? *dies*

The Dragon is the most BLATANT example of deus ex machina I've ever seen in my life. OMG. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, WRITERS.

Also hi Merlin/Morgana I am back to shipping you again. Yes please do constantly plot and work to thwart each other and generally be excellent twisted shippy material.

I am overwhelmed by how hot this pairing has become. Originally I didn't see the appeal because it just felt...sexless. I couldn't see her ever having an interest with each other. But now they are OBSESSED with each other, and they're connected forever, and DEAR GOD. MORE, MORE, MORE. This scene KILLED me (And it's even better in slow-mo!):

The way he looks at her... @_@

if they could have Gwen find out I would...man I don’t even know what I would do. Send a fan letter? Picspam the whole scene? Make further attempts to have all my friends start watching this show? I don’t know but it would be a great great thing and I want it to happen soon.

I would drive up to Canada and have a huge bonfire with you. With confetti. And fireworks. And lots of sugar.

This is why I'm looking forward to the possible escape from Camelot spoilers so much. Let's see that kingdom my Pendragons will be ruling!

REPRISE THE WITCHFINDER SHOW. LET'S SEE GWEN TALKING TO THE PEOPLE, IT IS THE BEST THING.

Also the dragon what. -hands- Clearly he is just the Voice of the Writers at this point, I have given up trying to make sense of him as a real character. Though man, if he's going to be a plot device couldn't he direct those deus ex machina tendencies to manufacturing more Arthur/Gwen scenes?

SERIOUSLY. The twisty hatesex potential is expanding by the minute. *_* More please!

I'll invite the neighbourhood! Also teach myself how to do fireworks in advance because I never have before.
